AMD launches Kintex UltraScale+ Gen 2 mid-range FPGAs

AMD has introduced the Kintex UltraScale+ Gen 2 family, a major refresh of its mid‑range FPGA portfolio designed to meet the rising performance, bandwidth, and longevity demands of next‑generation industrial, medical, test, and broadcast systems.

AMD has officially launched the Kintex UltraScale+ Gen 2 mid‑range FPGA lineup, marking a significant architectural modernization of its long‑standing Kintex platform. The new family targets designers building performance‑critical systems that require high bandwidth, real‑time responsiveness, and long‑term product availability. According to AMD, the devices will be supported through at least 2045, underscoring their suitability for regulated and long‑lifecycle markets such as medical imaging, industrial automation, and professional media production.

The Gen 2 series introduces upgraded memory bandwidth, modernized I/O, and advanced security features, enabling it to handle increasingly data‑heavy workloads. High‑speed transceivers and PCIe Gen4 support allow the FPGAs to power demanding applications including 4K/8K AV‑over‑IP, multi‑stream capture, frame‑accurate broadcast transport, and high‑throughput test and measurement systems.

Industry analysts note that the launch is a strategic move aimed at strengthening AMD’s position in the mid‑range FPGA segment, an area traditionally dominated by competing platforms. The company emphasizes that this is not merely a lithography update but a comprehensive modernization designed to meet the needs of bandwidth‑hungry, latency‑sensitive edge systems.

With applications spanning machine vision, semiconductor inspection, robotic systems, industrial control, and professional broadcast, the Kintex UltraScale+ Gen 2 family is positioned as a versatile solution for designers seeking deterministic performance and robust connectivity. AMD also highlights the benefit of its proven development tools and security frameworks, which aim to simplify integration and accelerate time‑to‑market for engineering teams.

By combining long‑term availability with modern performance capabilities, AMD’s latest FPGA family sets the stage for a new generation of intelligent, high‑performance embedded systems across multiple industries.
