Zebra Technologies launches its first AI Developer Challenge

Zebra Technologies has announced the launch of its first AI Developer Challenge. The competition, aimed at independent software vendors (ISVs) within Zebra’s PartnerConnect programme, seeks to drive the development of new AI-driven tools that can address complex business challenges.

The challenge will run from September 15 to December 15, 2024, and invites developers to create a working AI application that can operate on Zebra’s handheld mobile devices equipped with the Qualcomm 6490 chipset. Participants will be required to incorporate at least one AI model and software development kit (SDK) provided by Zebra, though they are free to use additional technologies, such as Google’s ML Kit and MediaPipe, or Qualcomm’s AI Hub.

Stuart Hubbard, Senior Director of AI and Advanced Development at Zebra, highlighted the significance of the initiative. “Developers, alongside engineers and data scientists, are driving some of the most critical advancements in AI today,” he said. “This challenge is an opportunity to innovate with the community, focusing on technology that can significantly improve business operations, workforce management, and customer experience.”

Participants will have access to a range of resources, including Zebra’s AI tools, SDKs, private community forums, and technical support from Zebra engineers throughout the competition. This support is designed to help developers navigate the complexities of AI application development and bring their ideas to life.

The move comes as AI tools are increasingly being integrated into software development. A 2023 survey by Stack Overflow, which included responses from over 90,000 developers, revealed that 70 percent of them are already using or planning to use AI tools in their work. The survey also found strong support for AI in the development community, with 77 percent of respondents expressing favorable views toward these tools.

Developers interested in participating must register by September 13, 2024. Those not already in the PartnerConnect program will need to join before they can enter the challenge. Winners, who will be recognised in January 2025, stand to gain not only prizes but also potential sponsorship and industry recognition.

This AI Developer Challenge represents Zebra Technologies’ latest effort to foster innovation at a time when AI is playing an increasingly central role in business operations. By engaging its developer community, Zebra aims to explore new solutions that can help businesses meet their most pressing challenges.
